History

The first station was constructed in 1884 on the corner of Melbourne and Grey Streets and was known as Melbourne Street Station. It was a terminal station for services on the southern side of the river until 1978. It was reconstructed on higher ground in 1891 and opened on 21 December of that year. The new station was named South Brisbane.

In 1930 South Brisbane also became the site of the South Brisbane (Interstate) Station because it was the terminus of the standard gauge railway from Sydney to Brisbane. The Interstate Station occupied land that is now used by the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

On 18 November 1978 the railway line was extended, via the Merivale Bridge from South Brisbane into Roma Street Railway Station on the opposite side of the Brisbane River. The Interstate station was demolished in 1986 to make way for the World Expo 88 site.

The 1891 station building was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.

On 31 October 2011 South Brisbane station will be closed to the public for a period of six weeks until 9 December 2011. The extent of the work includes Structural Maintenance and the raising of the platforms. Although trains will still travel through South Brisbane during this period, they will not stop here for the duration. Queensland Rail will be operating a shuttle bus between South Brisbane and South Bank stations during this time.

The station is very convenient to the Queensland Cultural Centre, including the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and the State Library.
